Brief history of the artist:
Jeff was born in South Africa, in 1941. He
graduated from high school in 1959, and achieved a South African national diploma
(Bachelor of
Arts equivalent) in art education at the Port Elizabeth School of Art in
1962. He won a national bursary competition to study graphic design, and
was awarded his diploma in 1964. Jeff then embarked on a career in
advertising, finally as Creative Director of an agency called "T.E.A.M."
He was director of his own Illustration and Design studio
from 1984 through 1991. Jeff had already achieved several solo shows by
the time that he decided to become a full-time fine artist in 1992.
The artist works in his own studio in Johannesburg, South
Africa.
Description of his work: He has a wide ranging ability,
painting buildings, landscapes, motorcars, steam locomotives,
motorcycles and animals. Jeff welcomes most projects, enjoying the rich
experience of variety in subject matter. His technique is influenced by
his work in advertising and illustration. His work is influenced by
American Super-realists, Wilson Hurley, Richard Estes and James Bama. His work is characterized
by close attention to detail, such as the gravel on the roads, and the
reflections in windows. In his paintings of vehicles he chooses
bright lustrous colors, yet in his landscapes, the use of color is
subdued and subtle. The artist currently uses top quality Liquitex acrylic and artisan oils on gesso-prepared
boards or canvas.
He works from photographic reference, and makes a point of taking his own
photos. He has consequently been on countless
treks in southern Africa, and the United States of America. He enjoys very large or
medium sized paintings, and does commissions for owners of selected
vehicles (trucks, motorcycles and yachts) or property as and when they are
requested of him.
